Kindred Spirit Travelers
“Kindred spirits are not so scarce as I used to think. It's splendid to find out there are so many of them in the world.”
L. M. Montgomery
As I was nearing my 30th birthday, I was coming to the realization that my marital state was not going to change anytime soon. Like anyone in this situation, there are lots of pros and cons to contemplate. For me, one of my biggest worries was that I would need to experience the world alone and without any kindred spirits as fellow travelers. I loved traveling and was fine doing so solo, however, I knew there are certain things I would like to enjoy with someone by my side.
Enter Meg - who will make regular appearances in future posts.
Meg and I discovered each other at just the right time. We share many similarities: our red hair, our love of literature, our love of teaching kids . . . so naturally we both dreamed of paying homage to our favorite literary redhead - Anne Shirley!
So without a question, Meg, myself and two others made the journey to Prince Edward Island a month before I turned 30. We stayed at the Kindred Spirits Bed and Breakfast, biked along the shore, stumbled upon a beach wedding where the bride asked us to blow bubbles during her ceremony (I can’t make this stuff up), enjoyed high tea, experienced mussels for the first time (which began a life long love affair) and watched Hurricane Bill come ashore the legendary red sandy beaches of Prince Edward Island.
Like any memorable trip, I learned so much about life and myself. At the top of the list is that kindred spirits are not as scarce as we often think (Thanks Anne!). This trip would not have been the same if I went with a significant other. All of the magic of Prince Edward Island, the Anne haunts and L.M. Montgomery wisdom would have meant something entirely different with out a fellow kindred spirit by my side. Since this unforgettable trip, much has changed in our lives. Meg and I don’t get to see each other nearly as much as we would like for a number of reasons. However, one lesson that Anne Shirley taught so well has proven to be true:
“True friends are always together in spirit.”
