Susan B. Anthony was a pivotal leader of a sisterhood of suffragettes that courageously fought for many freedoms, which women of today enjoy. Her bravery and commitment to women's equality continue to inspire future generations. The suffragettes who worked to pass the 19th Amendment are evidence that when people come together for a shared vision - change can happen and some pretty amazing friendships are formed as well.
We will celebrate the legacy of suffragettes by gathering with friends and supporting More than Words, a Boston area non-profit youth-run business that also happens to be my favorite bookstore in Boston! Their philosophy is "work inspires youth to take charge of their lives by taking charge of a business." Members of More than Words will be in attendance to share about their "The Power is Yours" effort which empowers young people to address issues and laws that impact their lives.
One of the many lessons we can learn from the suffragettes is the power of building community and friendship among diverse sets of people. The people at More than Words do this through their bookstore and the youth they empower.
In addition, we will hear from a political operative who has spent her career recruiting and training female candidates to run for political office or serve in public service. She will share current research on parity in politics, roadblocks for female candidates, and best practices for women to engage politically.
Of course, there will be heavy hors d'oeuvres, an open bar, cupcakes, and party favors. As a gift, please bring a gently used book to donate to More Than Words - no need to wrap your present!
Proceeds from ticket sales will go towards More Than Words, however, the price of tickets are not tax deductible. There will be an opportunity on February 15th to make a personal contribution to More Than Words.
